Hosted by dance instructor and choreographer Julienne Saad, who was the advanced class teacher at Danse Orientale for several years. This is a rare opportunity to dance to a live qanun.
The qanun is an ancient instrument, the exact origin of which is difficult to determine. Arabic, Turkish, Iranian and Armenian music traditions all feature the qanun in similar forms.
Phil Nakad is a young Arab-Australian musician, with several years experience playing the bass guitar and the qanun at a wide range of concerts and functions.
Phil has a particular interest in traditional musical forms from across the Arab world. Since 2004 Phil has performed on the kanun with Al Shareq, Australia's premier Arabic art music ensemble.
