The 216 Browser Safe Colors

On this page, I have tried to provide an aid to selecting your background color and text colors using the Browser Safe Color Palette.

TO USE MY COLOR SELECTOR

Simply click on the color of your choice!

This will take you to a page showing your chosen color as:

Background
Shown with black, white and multicolored text.

Text
Shown on a small selection of different colored backgrounds, with accompanying hex number and RGB values.

This color palette does not use Javascript, so when you click on the color of your choice, it will take a few seconds to load the color page ... then, if you scroll up or down, you will also see a selection of five other related colors.

WHY CHOOSE ONE OF THESE COLORS?

Many people surf the net with their browsers set to read only 256 colors.
If you specify a color that is not one of these "Browser Safe" colors, then their browser will display either the closest color, or a dithered (spotty) color.

For example, all of my pages used to have the background color of "#C0D9D9", which is a lovely pale bluish-green color, but it is not one of these "216 Browser Safe" colors. I was very surprised when I viewed my pages with a 256 color browser ... it looked GREY ... not at all what I wanted! So, I changed my colors to avoid that problem!

HEXADECIMAL CODES

The hexadecimal color code should always be quoted as "#xxxxxx"
Please do not leave out the "#........"
You will find that the color will probably work without them, but you cannot guarantee that it will work properly with all browsers.

Note that the 0 is the number 0 and NOT the letter O.

COLOR NAMES

I now have a similar palette featuring 140 Color Names! Please note that they are not supported by all browsers, and the viewer must have more than 256 colors available on their monitor to be able to see them. Most of these colors are not within this Browser Safe Color Palette. But... the names are certainly eaiser to remember than these codes!
