THE CHOLI
Materials Required for all Sizes

  • Panne Velvet - 90cm (36") of 150cm (60") wide fabric
  • Bias binding  - 2.5 m (98") of 12 mm (1/2") wide binding

Sizes: This choli pattern comes in five different sizes, ranging from 32A to 42E.

I have used inch measurements rather than dress sizes, due to international variations.

I suggest that you make a sample choli with the size closest to your measurements, and then "tweak" it if necessary to fit yourself better. Because this choli is made with stretch panne velvet, and because you can tie the bands looser or tighter as you wish, it will comfortably fit a range of sizes.

Nap: Panne velvet has a definite "nap" to the fabric. To work out which way the nap runs, place your palm on the fabric, and smooth it up and down. You will notice that in one direction your hand glides smoothly over the fabric. In the opposite direction it feels rough. Lay your fabric so that it feels smooth when you run your hand down from the top to the bottom.

Making your pattern: 1 square on your pattern = 1" ( 2.5cm ) Enlarge your pattern pieces by either drawing them out onto larger graph paper, or by using an enlarging photocopier.

Sleeves: Because the sleeve pattern pieces are too long to print on one page, I have cut the sleeve pattern into two pieces. Simply overlap the grey areas on each graph, and tape together for your full sleeve pattern piece.

Bands and Ties: I have not included pattern pieces for the bands and ties because they are so simple. Please cut the following sizes:

Neck ties (all sizes): Cut two strips 15" (38cm) long and 1 1/4" (3cm) wide

Choli Bands: Cut two bands 2 1/4" (6cm) wide and the length that matches your choli size:
